In Mac OS X 10.5, mounted file servers no longer show up on a user's desktop by default. If you want to change this setting for your users, but not overwrite their existing Finder preferences using a User Environment package, the best way to do this would be through a script that uses the "defaults" command. Write a script that can be run at Login that updates the proper key in the "com.apple.Finder.plist" file that will turn this feature on for your users.
Each month we’ll challenge you to solve a problem using a product from JAMF Software. Greetings
For those of us in the Upper Midwest, today is a big day. After a
rougher than normal winter we are welcoming, with open arms, the
arrival of spring. You can hear a collective sigh of relief as our
snow melts and the grass begins to peak through.
Not that the winter has kept us down though. Recently, JAMF Software
was asked to speak at the University of Utah's Mac Manager's Meeting.
You can download this here, or find it on iTunes. Amy Larson,
Education Account Executive, and Jonah Klevesah, Systems Engineer, led
the discussion.
Casper Suite customers will be contacted over the coming days about
our latest 5.13 maintenance release. Stability and bug fixes were our
primary focus as we continue working towards our major Casper Suite
6.0 release later this summer. Upgrade procedures, a list of
enhancements and bug fixes can be found in the release notes.
Case Study
Jeffrey Bonnaci of Ogilvy & Mather manages an environment of nearly 2,200 machines, including 750 Macs across 19 locations. Click here to find out how he does it using the Casper Suite.
Congratulations CCA Graduates!
The CCA course held in New York in February was a huge success. The feedback from the course was outstanding, including a great note from one of our attendees who wrote this email:
“I just thought you might like to know that Casper saved our clients from a disastrous rollout. We had an application go out that didn’t work properly, and using Casper, I was able to fix the problem one time on a test machine, package the results, and set up a policy to distribute the fix to all of the affected clients without spending all night at the office or even leaving my desk! Please forward my thanks to Wudi. I wouldn’t have had the ability to implement Casper to make this fix so quickly and smoothly without his instruction at the CCA course.”
Our next CCA course will be held in Minneapolis on April 22-25. This 4-day course includes a hands-on series of exercises where challenges are presented to system administrators to demonstrate their proficiency through resolution. It is always good practice to frequently change your local account passwords, especially for accounts with elevated privileges in your environment. This PDF is a quick overview of how you can go about creating a policy in your JSS to update/reset the passwords for your local administrator accounts, as well as the account that Casper uses for remote management. By setting up a policy to reset the passwords, you will be sure to have a log of all the managed workstations that received the update as well as have a list of any machine that will run the next time it checks in with the JSS. Click here for detailed instructions on how to change your local account passwords.
"Finally there's an affordable OS X network management tool. Open Source solutions are free, but nothing beats a well-developed desktop management system like this. Casper has imaging, inventory, script deployment, OS customizing, and monitoring. We couldn't afford not to have it."
